چکیده

We show that if space is compact, then trajectories cannot be defined in the framework of the quantum Hamilton–Jacobi (HJ) equation. The starting point is the simple observation that when the energy is quantised it is not possible to make variations with respect to the energy, and the time parameterisation t − t0 = ∂ES0, implied by Jacobi’s theorem, which leads to the group velocity, is ill defined. It should be stressed that this follows directly from the quantum HJ equation without any axiomatic assumption concerning the standard formulation of quantum mechanics. This provides a stringent connection between the quantumHJ equation and the Copenhagen interpretation. Together with tunnelling and the energy quantisation theorem for confining potentials, formulated in the framework of quantumHJ equation, it leads to the main features of the axioms of quantum mechanics from a unique geometrical principle. Similar to the case of the classical HJ equation, this fixes its quantum analog by requiring that there exist point transformations, rather than canonical ones, leading to the trivial hamiltonian. This is equivalent to a basic cocycle condition on the states. Such a cocycle condition can be implemented on compact spaces, so that continuous energy spectra are allowed only as a limiting case. Remarkably, a compact space would also imply that the Dirac and vonNeumann formulations of quantum mechanics essentially coincide. We suggest that there is a definition of time parameterisation leading to trajectories in the context of the quantum HJ equation having the probabilistic interpretation of the Copenhagen School.

An introduction to effective low-energy Hamiltonians in condensed matter physics and chemistry

After a brief introduction to second quantisation notation (section II), which is used extensively, I focus of the “four H’s”: the Hückel (or tight binding; section III), Hubbard (section IV), Heisenberg (section V) and Holstein (section VII) models. These models play central roles in our understanding of condensed matter, particularly for materials where electronic correlations are important, ...

Spectral Statistics for the Dirac Operator on Graphs

We determine conditions for the quantisation of graphs using the Dirac operator for both two and four component spinors. According to the Bohigas-Giannoni-Schmit conjecture for such systems with time-reversal symmetry the energy level statistics are expected, in the semiclassical limit, to correspond to those of random matrices from the Gaussian symplectic ensemble. This is confirmed by numeric...

Fast shower simulation in the ATLAS calorimeter

The time to simulate pp collisions in the ATLAS detector is largely dominated by the showering of electromagnetic particles in the heavy parts of the detector, especially the electromagnetic barrel and endcap calorimeters. Two procedures have been developed to accelerate the processing time of electromagnetic particles in these regions: (1) a fast shower parameterisation and (2) a frozen shower...

A parameterisation of shear-driven turbulence for ocean climate models

We present a new parameterisation for shear-driven, stratified, turbulent mixing which is pertinent to climate models, in particular the shear-driven mixing in overflows and the Equatorial Undercurrent. Critically for climate applications this parameterisation is simple enough to be implemented implicitly, which allows the parameterisation to be used with timesteps that are long compared to bot...

A parameterisation of single and multiple muons in the deep water or ice

A new parameterisation of atmospheric muons deep underwater (or ice) is presented. It takes into account the simultaneous arrival of muons in bundle giving the multiplicity of the events and the muon energy spectrum as a function of their lateral distribution in a shower.
